The iQIYI app is the international version of one of the largest video platforms in China. It offers Chinese dramas, Korean and Thai series, anime and variety shows, with a mix of free episodes and VIP content, and it is a popular choice for viewers who enjoy grand historical epics, romance series and imaginative fantasy dramas.
In this guide you will learn what the iQIYI app offers outside China, how free and VIP content differ, how subtitles and languages work, how to download episodes and how to set up the app on iPhone and Android. You will also find tips to discover good series and the limits to consider before paying for a VIP membership.
Direct answer: download iQIYI from the official store, create an account and watch the episodes available for free, which may include ads. VIP membership unlocks more episodes, earlier access and fewer ads. Prices vary by country and promotion, so check the current VIP options in the app before subscribing, and cancel through the store if needed.
iQIYI produces many of its own series, which means some of the most popular Chinese dramas premiere on the platform. Fans of historical dramas, xianxia fantasy and modern romance will find a large catalog. The app also licenses Korean and Thai series, making it a broader option for Asian content than its name might suggest.
A common mistake is starting a long series without checking how many episodes are free. Many dramas offer the first episodes for free and lock later episodes behind VIP, or release new episodes earlier for VIP members. Look at the episode list before you invest your time, so that you know what to expect from the free version.
Next, you will see a comparison of free and VIP access, a step-by-step setup guide, how subtitles and dubbing work, how to use downloads, the most popular genres on the platform and a short checklist to enjoy iQIYI on your phone without surprises when a series suddenly asks for a VIP subscription before the next episode.

| Feature | Free | VIP |
|---|---|---|
| Episodes | Selected episodes and titles | Larger catalog and earlier access |
| Ads | Yes | Reduced or removed |
| Downloads | Limited | Available on eligible titles |

Original iQIYI productions
A big advantage of iQIYI is its own production. The platform creates and co-produces many Chinese series, which often premiere there first. Fans who follow Chinese entertainment news will recognise many titles on the home screen, and the app highlights new originals with banners and collections that make discovery easy.
If you are new to Chinese dramas, start with shorter modern series before moving to long historical epics, which can have more than fifty episodes. This helps you find the genres you enjoy without committing to very long stories too early.
iQIYI on other devices
iQIYI works on phones, tablets, web browsers and many smart TVs. Use the same account on every device to keep your progress synced. If you subscribe to VIP through a mobile store, cancel through that store if you no longer need the membership, and check the renewal date to avoid an unwanted charge.
Before travelling abroad, remember that catalogs can change by country, so download your episodes in advance when the title allows it.
Safety and account tips
Install iQIYI only from the official stores, use a strong password and enable any login protection the app offers. Avoid unofficial websites that promise free VIP accounts, because they often lead to scams or malware. If you share the account with family, create profiles where available so recommendations stay relevant.
Finally, review your subscription in the store settings every few months. Cancel if you no longer watch, and subscribe again only when a new series you want is released, which keeps your entertainment budget under control.
A short weekly routine of one or two episodes also keeps long series enjoyable.
